In FHD, Our explorations on parametric methods expand from a simple 2 dimensional pattern (flooring, roofing pattern or screen) to a complex program distribution and urban level organization methods. For the past 6 years we have explored different levels of approach in parametric methods to see how we can expand our “design space” to generate certain specific (unique) “local” solutions appropriate in response to the user.

This article is an extension of the previous post on parametric explorations in FHD Group. Part 1 spoke of simple parametric exploration on 1D, 2D, 2.5 Dimensions and their manifestations

3D

SCREEN #01

Our exploration is on how to articulate a complex surface model using a simple contour methodology for its construction. We explore with perforation and opacity to manipulate the 3d screen as a light fixture. The screen does not only act as a spatial divider but as an artifact in space, a point of surprise for any visitor while entering the house.

SCREEN # 02

The characteristic of entry as an interstitial (from the exterior to interior or vice versa) leads us to design of the Entrance portals for one of the largest Malls in Tehran.

In the Grand Mosque of Isfahan, one can experience the entrance portal not only a marker for the entrance of the mosque but also as an expanded space with most elaborated geometrical pattern and depth variations of 3-dimensional “Muqarnas”. This gives you a mental and physical experience of the transition from earth to heaven (the abode of the god).

The requirement for an entrance portal in the multiple entries of the Mall gives us an opportunity to explore this expanded interstitial space of the doors as an experience for entering the mall.

We set up a diamond-shaped SS finish module varying in depths and lighting elements as a modern interpretation of those Muqarnas. The variations and their distributions were studied with the help of a parametric setup to optimize. It is limited to 15-16 numbers of variations and the distribution of them across the surface also been studied and chosen the opt one in relation to the passerby.

Modules are also differentiated with varying 3 types of reflectivity (from matt to mirror glossy finish) will create a shimmering reflection of lights in the sun and in the evenings from artificial light for those walking through it.

MURALS

MURAL # 01

This mural is a transformation of the client’s personal likings into a contemporary abstraction.

In this setup, the image has been read and pixelated in a certain rectilinear proportion to transform them into various glass finishes,

These glasses were organized as per the given template by glass artists who meticulously follow the drawing.

The glass wall panel is been lighted from behind and the light transmission is differentiated with glass finishes

MURAL # 02

A simple wall mural using Voronai pattern in 3d and engaged with an artist to do with threading the regions to create a 3-dimensional undulations

The next article will lead you to FHD Group’s manifestations on ‘program’ming and Master planning”. We will walk you through works done by FHD Consultants, demonstrating how parametric design approaches have obtained multiple design possibilities at Master Plan Level and organizing methods on the program.
